On September 15th and 16th the Sustainable Oceans Alliance and the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service had the pleasure of co-hosting the first ever Our Ocean One Future Summit with the United States Department of State. While the third annual Our Ocean Conference occurred in D.C. this year at the State Department, this was the first year that there was a parallel youth event held specifically to engage the millennial generation. Participants, many of whom are already entrepreneurs themselves, came from over 50 countries with mission statements that targeted a variety of ocean related issues such as overfishing, plastic pollution, ocean acidification, and destruction of habitats and reefs. Having the opportunity to engage with these incredible young ocean advocates and watch them interact with the summit speakers was truly powerful.
We welcomed outstanding speakers such as Dr. Sylvia Earle, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Charles Goddard, Editorial Director for the Economist, Dr. Jonathan Pershing, U.S Special Envoy for Climate Change, Dr. John Holdren, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, Philippe Cousteau, President and Co-Founder of EarthEcho, Ashlan Cousteau, Journalist and Filmmaker, Adrian Grenier, Actor and Environmentalist, and Secretary John Kerry. There were also a number of very impressive breakout speakers representing a multitude of professional fields, such as business, communications and scientific research.
Ultimately, through the Our Ocean One Future event, as well as through our continued efforts as the Sustainable Oceans Alliance, we hope to inspire both current and future ocean advocates to work together in the fields of business, government, science, technology, art and media to find lasting ways to protect our oceans.
